Zoey’s supreme chakalaka – Add some spice to any meal

Although chakalaka can be bought at your nearest supermarket, the homemade version is just so much tastier.

Open the pantry of any South African and you are likely to find a jar of supreme chakalaka. This much-loved South African spicy relish can turn any meal into a feast. Although chakalaka can be bought at your nearest supermarket, the homemade version is just so much tastier.

The best part of chakalaka is that you can adjust the recipe each time you prepare it according to your taste. Oftentimes a spoon or two of this tasty relish will be added to whatever is cooking on the stove as it adds so much flavour.

We have also included a recipe to prepare traditional stywe pap as it works really well with chakalaka. In fact, stywe pap and chakalaka is a staple food in Southern Africa.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion

  • 1 green pepper

  • 1 red pepper

  • 1 yellow pepper

  • 125 g mixed vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon Rajah, mild and spicy

  • ¼ cup chutney

  • ¼ cup tomato sauce

  • 1 cube beef stock

  • pinch of salt

  • 100 g brown onion soup

  • 3 tablespoons oil

  • Stywe Pap
  • 2.5 l water

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • 350 g maize meal

  • 1 tablespoon dry parsley

Method

  • Chakalaka
  • Chop the onion and peppers in small cubes.
  • Fry the onion with the peppers in a little bit of oil.
  • Add frozen mixed veggies and fry until everything is soft.
  • Add the Rajah, beef stock and salt.
  • Add the baked beans and stir well.
  • Mix the brown onion soup with a little bit of water. Add the chutney and tomato sauce and mix (this takes about 5 minutes).
  • Pour the brown onion soup mixture into the pot and allow to simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Stywe Pap
  • Boil the water and add the salt and butter.
  • Pour the maize meal slowly while stirring.
  • Sprinkle dry parsley over the maize meal and allow to cook for approximately 10 minutes.
  • Optional rolling: Allow the pap to cool down a bit and then put it inside aluminium foil and roll it with a rolling pin. Then, lift the foil and cut the sides to make it straight. Cover again and roll from the top to the end.
