A typical South African meal does not get more traditional and delicious than this. Steamed bread, also known as Dombolo, pairs excellently with a succulent lamb stew. It is a hearty meal packed with so much flavour and goodness.

This steamed bread recipe includes a clever trick to prepare the bread in oiled cups. The result is portion-sized steamed bread buns displaying beautifully on the serving dish.

The best way to enjoy steamed bread is to allow it to soak up all the meaty flavours in the lamb stew.

This traditional meal is perfect for those chilly days when you just want to remain indoors. With winter not too far away anymore, keep this recipe close by. And as you place this satisfying meal on the dinner table, you will see your family members’ faces light up with anticipation.

  • Steamed Bread
  • 1 kg 1 Snowflake cake flour

  • 5 g 5 instant yeast

  • 2 tablespoons 2 sugar

  • 1 teaspoon 1 salt

  • 4 tablespoons 4 oil

  • 750 ml 750 lukewarm water

  • 1 1 egg

  • Lamb Stew
  • 1 1 onion, chopped

  • 3 tablespoons 3 oil

  • 1 kg 1 leg of lamb cubes

  • 4 large 4 potatoes

  • 6 medium 6 baby marrows

  • 5 5 carrots

  • ½ ½ yellow pepper

  • ½ ½ red pepper

  • pinch pinch of salt

  • 1 cube 1 beef stock

  • 1 teaspoon 1 Raja

  • ¼ teaspoon ¼ turmeric

  • pinch pinch of thyme

  • 25 g 25 Knor brown onion soup

  • ½ teaspoon ½ crushed garlic


  • Steamed Bread
  • Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl, then add the water and mix until the dough is smooth.
  • Add the oil and egg mix.
  • Cover for 20 minutes in a warm environment to allow to rise. After 20 minutes mix again and cover for another 10 minutes.
  • Boil water in a large pot that can contain 8 cups.
  • Smear the 8 cups with oil and add ½ cup of dough in the cups. Place the cups with dough in the pot of boiling water and cover.
  • Remove and allow to cool for 2 – 3 minutes before removing the bread from the cups.
  • Lamb Stew
  • Add oil in a pot, sauté the chopped onions and braise until brown.
  • Add the meat, garlic, beef stock and spices. Stir for 2 minutes and cover.
  • Stir for another 2 minutes and add water to cover the meat. Leave to boil for 20 minutes.
  • Add the vegetables (carrots, potatoes) and cover for 5 minutes.
  • Add the peppers and baby marrow.
  • Add the Knor brown onion soup and allow to simmer.
  • Serve the supreme lamb stew with sliced steamed bread.
