Running out of pantry staples but no time to run to the groceries store? Try this vegan chocolate cake. It is tasty and is dairy-free and egg-free.

Interestingly, during the American Great Depression, milk, butter and eggs were not always readily available and bakers had to rely on substitute ingredients to create adaptable recipes that retained the flavour.

This vegan chocolate cake recipe is perfect for those of us steering clear of animal products. It is also ideal for anyone allergic to dairy products or eggs.

This recipe only includes the method how to prepare the actual sponge cake. You can also double or triple the recipe to create cake layers as can been seen in the photo of this recipe.

  • 250 g 250 flour

  • 6 tablespoons 6 vegetable oil

  • 1 cup 1 sugar

  • 1 teaspoon 1 baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon 1 salt

  • 1 teaspoon 1 white/apple cider vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon 1 vanilla essence

  • ¼ cup ¼ unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup 1 cold coffee or water


  • Mix all ingredients together.
  • Bake for 35 minutes at 190°C until all set and springy.
