When it’s game day, snacks should always be on the menu, but not everybody can eat those tasty chicken strips and wings you made. It’s time to expand and make these fried vegan nuggets with hand-cut, homemade potato fries. Unlike some vegan food, these nuggets have great texture and you can expand the flavours with the nuggets and chips. Whether you follow a plant-based diet or not, these “chicken-style” nuggets and chops will be very tasty.

The great part about this recipe is that you can make them in some oil of go for the healthier option and use your air fryer too. The paprika and seasoning elevates the flavour and you can also add these spices to the vegan nuggets too. You’re going to need a dipping sauce and there are many options. Try some vegan chickpea hummus or mustard and vegan mayo aioli to go with your golden crunchy treats.

Fried vegan nuggets recipe

If you don’t eat meat, you don’t need to skip out on all the regular go-to snacks. Try these vegan chicken nuggets that have zero chicken!

Ingredients

  • 8 medium 8 potatoes

  • 1 box 1 Fry’s chicken-style nuggets

  • 30 ml 30 olive oil (or regular cooking oil)

  • 30 ml 30 vinegar

  • 1 tbsp 1 paprika

  • 1 tbsp 1 sea salt

  • 1 tbsp 1 Ina Paarman Potato Spice

  • 1 tsp 1 Ina Paarman Rosemary & Olive spice

Method

  • Bring a large pot of water to the boil on your stove.
  • Peel the potatoes and cut into 1cm thick slices, and then 1cm thick chips.
  • Rinse the hand-cut chips under running water for a few seconds to get rid of excess starch.
  • Add vinegar to boiling water and place the chips in the boiling water and set a timer for 10min. The water will stop boiling from the cold chips – leave the stove on high until it starts boiling again. Then switch the stove off completely.
  • After exactly 10min, drain the parboiled chips through your colander and drizzle with oil.
  • Sprinkle all the spices over and gently toss until all the chips are evenly covered with spices.
  • Place spices chips in an air fryer on 200°C for 30min, shaking once after 10min.
  • 10min after placing chips in the air fryer, heat a small amount of oil in a frying pan and cook the chicken-style nuggets as per the cooking instructions (you can bake in the oven too, use your preferred method).
  • Serve with a side salad or roasted veggies if you choose.
