This is one of the creamiest and most delicious vanilla recipes that you can whip together for your family and friends. For many of us, these vanilla custard slices will take us back to Granny’s kitchen where there was always something tasty to enjoy.

Preparing the custard slices will not take too much of your time. However, after pouring the creamy vanilla custard into the pastry, you will have to wait for at least three to four hours to allow this mouth-watering dessert to set in the fridge.

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets 2 store-bought puff pastry, thawed

  • 8 cups 8 milk

  • 2 cups 2 granulated sugar

  • cups all-purpose flour

  • 4 4 eggs

  • 3 teaspoons 3 vanilla

  • ½ cup ½ powdered sugar for dusting

Method

  • Preheat oven to 180ºC.
  • Put pastry sheets onto two rectangle baking trays lined with non-stick baking paper and prick all over with a fork, but do not go all the way through the pastry.
  • Bake 20 – 25 minutes or until puffed up and golden. Remove from oven and set aside to cool.
  • Cut out the whole sheet of pastry according to the size of a rectangle pan of 9 x 13 inches and the second sheet of pastry cut into squares (about 12), that will be the top of the custard slices.
  • Pour the milk into a medium saucepan, bring the milk to a simmer, then remove from heat.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar and flour until very smooth.
  • Pour into the saucepan with milk and mix to combine well, add vanilla extract.
  • Return to the heat, stir constantly over medium-low heat until the custard boils and thickens.
  • Remove custard from heat.
  • Pour the custard over the pastry in the prepared rectangle pan 9 x 13 inches, gently put the remaining cut out sheets of pastry on top of the vanilla custard layer.
  • Refrigerate at least 3 – 4 hours or until set.
  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
