Tomato and Mushroom Dhal: A protein packed meal with flavour

We love dhal, and if you haven’t tried it yet we beg that you give this recipe a try. This dish is packed with flavours and aromas that will make your belly rumble in anticipation of its greatness!

What is dhal?

Dhal is a combination of split legumes and peas such as, lentils.

Dhal is full of protein and an excellent substitute for rice and in our opinion a lot more tasty! It can also be paired with so many flavoursome combinations that you’ll probably be inspired to eat dhal on a weekly basis.

Ready in just thirty minutes, this tomato and mushroom Dhal is the ideal protein packed dinner for any day of the week.

Ingredients

  • 30 ml 30 oil

  • 1 1 onion, diced

  • 3 3 garlic cloves, crushed

  • 15 ml 15 fresh ginger, finely grated

  • 15 ml 15 curry paste

  • 400 g 400 portabellini mushrooms, halved

  • 410 g 410 or 1 tin chopped tomatoes

  • 2 g 2 or 2 tins brown lentils, drained

  • 45 ml 45 plain yoghurt or thick cream

  • 30 ml 30 fresh coriander, chopped

  • To Serve (optional):
  • rice

  • naan bread

  • raita

  • toasted coconut

Method

  • Heat the oil in a pan and gently fry the onion and garlic for 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the ginger, curry paste and mushrooms and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomatoes and lentils and simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Top with yoghurt or cream and coriander.
  • Serve with rice or naan breads, raita and/or toasted coconut.
