Summer is here of course, and it’s time for days spent outside with your friends. However, you might not be lighting that braai yet you still want snacks to nibble on as you enjoy the company. These homemade spiced nuts are a great addition to any weekend get together, but also great for chilling at home while watching movies or when you need a snack in the middle of the day instead of a whole meal. These nuts have a bit of sweetness to go with the herbs and spices, but you can play around with the flavours and even the nuts in the mixture.

Homemade spiced nuts tips

You can include peanuts, brazil nuts, walnuts, macadamias, hazelnuts, whole almonds, cashews. Together with the type of nuts you’re using, you can play around with different spices. It’s especially fun when you have different bowls with a variety of flavours for everybody to try. Not only are they tasty but they are very easy to throw together before your guests arrive.

Ingredients

  • 500g mixed unsalted nuts (you can include peanuts, brazil nuts, walnuts, macadamias, hazelnuts, whole almonds, cashews)

  • 1 tsp 1 mild curry powder

  • 1 tsp 1 ground cumin

  • 1 tsp 1 ground coriander

  • 1 tsp 1 smoked paprika

  • 1 tsp 1 cayenne pepper

  • 75 ml 75 sherry vinegar

  • 1 tbsp 1 sunflower oil

  • 70 g 70 caster sugar

  • salt and pepper

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment paper.
  • Add the sunflower oil, vinegar and sugar to a bowl. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Whisk in the spices, and seasoning to taste.
  • Add the nuts to the spice mixture and mix together until evenly coated.
  • Tip the nuts out onto the lined baking sheet and roast in the oven for 7 minutes, then turn them over and roast for a further 8 – 10 minutes.
  • Allow to cool on the tray. These nuts can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
