Do you love all of the seafood we have along the South African coastline? If you’re from the Western Cape, you also enjoy some curry flavour with your fish. A great way to preserve fish is by pickling it but it also adds some amazing flavour. This pickled curry fish recipe is a great side with a light salad, even during cold winter months. It’s a flavour-packed delicacy which you can easily make at home.

Pickled curry fish preparation suggestions

Mackerel and herring are the best options for this recipe as they are flaky and hold up to the cooking part of the process without completely falling apart. Other than onions, you can also add actual pickles and some cabbage to the mixture. Don’t overcook the fish, otherwise it will become tough. Serve your pickled fish warm with some fresh warm bread or rice for the best results.
