Pecan Nut Pie

When you’ve had a hearty lunch or dinner, the urge to have dessert is always there. Having a great dessert will wake everybody up again and they’ll eat even more and enjoy the company for a while longer. This homemade pecan pie is a sweet and savoury treat that’s perfect for big family events or parties. The pecan pie is often seen in American homes but it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy your own too with a cup of tea or coffee.

Homemade pecan nut pie tips

Making your own puff pastry is a process that can take ages, but lucky for you, store-bought puff pastry is still great to use and is rarely a flop. The filling is a beautifully sweet and buttery mix that is perfect with the soft pecan nuts and you can also grind some of the nuts in the mixture too. The crust needs to be par baked so that your filling doesn’t soften it up too much. Your pecan pie is best served with whipped cream or ice cream and a warm cup of coffee or tea.

  • 1 packet puff pastry

  • 2 cups pecan nuts, shelled

  • 5 tbsp butter, melted and slightly cooled

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 tsp vanilla essence

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 3 large eggs, room temperature

  • 1 cup syrup or honey

  • sea salt for sprinkling

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • Grease a pie dish with butter. Roll out the cooled pastry and cut a circle 4 cm wider than the pie dish.
  • Tuck the pastry in with your fingers, making sure it is smooth. Place the circle of pastry in the pie dish and prick the base with a fork. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove the pie crust from the oven and prepare the filling.
  • Spread pecans evenly inside the warm pie crust and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter, brown sugar, and flour together until combined and thick. Add the vanilla essence, salt, eggs, and syrup and whisk until combined. Pour the mixture evenly over the pecans.
  • Bake the pie for 40 minutes, or until the top is crispy and lightly browned. Remove the pie from the oven and sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on top.
  • Place on a wire rack and allow to cool completely. The filling will set as it cools.
  • Serve the pie at room temperature with cream or ice-cream.
