Old-fashioned cookies – Just like Grandma used to bake them

Enjoy a taste of nostalgia with these traditional sugary cookies.

Remember those sweet cookies grandma used to bake? We have just the recipe for you to bake your own batch of old-fashioned cookies. It comes with a little extra sugar for sprinkling.

You can have these old-fashioned cookies ready in less than an hour. Prep time is only about 15 minutes and then you need to allow the dough to rest for 30 minutes. Next, cut the cookies with a cookie cutter and bake in the oven for 10 minutes. When the cookies have cooled down, you can sprinkle them with sugar for that extra sweetness. That is if you like some extra sugar on your cookies.

These old-fashioned cookies are perfect for teatime or as an anytime snack when you feel that familiar sweet tooth craving. They are the best when dipped into a steaming cup of tea or coffee.

Ingredients

  • 560 g 560 cake flour

  • 200 g 200 white sugar

  • 10 ml 10 cream of tartar

  • 2.5 ml 2.5 salt

  • 250 g 250 butter

  • 5 ml 5 bicarbonate of soda

  • 30 ml 30 milk

  • 2 large 2 eggs

  • 5 ml 5 vanilla essence

  • extra sugar for sprinkling

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180ºC.
  • Mix the flour, sugar, cream of tartar and salt together.
  • Rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  • Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the milk.
  • Beat the eggs and add the vanilla essence.
  • Add the bicarbonate of soda and beaten eggs to the flour mixture.
  • Mix well to form a smooth dough.
  • Cover the dough with plastic foil and place it in the fridge for 30 minutes. 
  • On a lightly floured surface roll the dough out to 4 mm thickness and press out with a cookie cutter of your choice.
  • Place on a greased baking tray.
  • Bake for 8 – 10 minutes until done.
  • Leave to cool and sprinkle with a little bit of white sugar (optional).
