A South African cuisine, not sure it is known by all, but here in Pretoria, it is a hit at any braai. This honey, tomato sauce and soy combination is something else. Honestly, the sauce is what makes the Oepsie!

Quite expensive to buy at the butcher of the local food store, but making your own is something the whole family will enjoy participating in. Just make sure to count the cherries!

Personally, these are my favourite and if it were up to me i wouldn’t share them with anyone. So, my advice is to be sure that you make enough.

These mouthwatering sosaties of sorts are coveted at a braai and an absolute must to make.

Ingredients

  • 2 x packets Streaky Bacon (This recipe makes more than enough sauce to use at least 4 packets Enterprise Bacon)

  • 2 cups 2 Tomato Sauce

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 Honey

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 dark Brown Sugar

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 Soy Sauce

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 Oil

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 Lemon Juice

  • 2 Chillies chopped

  • 1 cup 1 Glacé Cherries

  • Skewers.

Method

  • Method: To make the bacon twists
  • This can be tricky, but when you get the hang of it, it is quite simple.
  • Pierce the skewer through one end of the bacon, then add cherry, twist the bacon around the cherry and pierce again the bacon in front though skewer, so that the cherry it is secured. Move the twisted bacon and cherry up and repeat again until you have the length that you desire. If you run out of bacon just repeat with new strip bacon. Do it at least halfway up the skewer.
  • Place all the Oepsies into a dish
  • Method: Marinade
  • Combine the tomato sauce. Honey sugar and the rest of the ingredients. Stir well before brushing onto the Oepsies.
  • Marinated for 1 hour but if you do this overnight is will be just yummier.
  • Place the twits on the braai or under the grill on medium heat until they are crispy and golden, basting with more sauce as you go along.
  • Serve at the braai as a starter with garlic bread.
