Did you know that 14 July is dedicated to macaroni and cheese? Yep, this easy, affordable pasta dish is so popular that there is even a day dedicated to it. If you are looking for a quick and easy dish to prepare for a crowd that will not cost an arm and a leg, this is always a great option.

The only meatiness in this recipe is 250 g of bacon but it adds so much flavour to the macaroni and cheese dish that you will want to take a second helping. However, macaroni and cheese is so versatile, that you can substitute ingredients according to your liking and budget.

Sometimes it is hard to please everyone in a large family when it comes to dinner time. But usually, macaroni and cheese is loved by most. Even, little ones love to gobble down the slippery pieces of macaroni.

  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese

  • 4 eggs

  • 1 litre milk

  • 250 g bacon

  • 2-3 tomatoes (optional)

  • parsley

  • bread crumbs

  • 500 g Macaroni

  • salt and pepper


  • Boil the macaroni in salted water until al dente. Drain in a colander, and reserve some of the cooking liquid.
  • Grease a casserole dish with butter and sprinkle with bread crumbs.
  • In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs and milk together and season to taste. You can add a little of the cooking liquid leftover from the cooking pasta, not more than 100 ml.  
  • Add 1½ cups of grated cheese to the mixture.
  • Tip the pasta mixture into the buttered casserole dish that is sprinkled with crumbs.
  • Place sliced tomatoes (optional) on the top of the dish, season and sprinkle with parsley and little crumbs.
  • Place strips or cubes of bacon on top and add the rest of the cheese over the top.
  • Bake in the oven at 180°C for 30 minutes or until set.
  • Serve with a salad of your choice
