What’s your favourite pie? Is it a fruit pie, dessert pie or meaty pie? One of the most popular pies other than sausage rolls are pepper steak pies. They are meaty, crispy and peppery enough to give you a slight sweat. However, they aren’t always that great when you buy them at a random shop, but there is another option. Homemade Pepper Steak Pie is everything you want in a steak pie, made in the comfort of your own kitchen. It’s a great weekend meal for the whole family and you’ll love every bite.

The pastry recipe for this pie is basic and quick to make, but you can easily use ready-made puff pastry from your local store. The pepper steak filling is rich, peppery and absolutely delicious. The tenderness of the steak is improved by your favourite beer with a dark stout like Guinness being the most popular option. Not only will it make the steak more tender, but add tons of flavour and richness to the sauce. The steak filling takes about 45 minutes to make and baking takes 30 minutes. If you’re making the pastry, the rest of the time is the perfect opportunity to make the filling.

Ingredients

  • Pie filling
  • 1 kg beef steak, cubed

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 1 pinch salt

  • 1 large onion, sliced

  • olive oil, for frying

  • 3 tbsp brandy

  • 1 cup beer (stout is your best option)

  • 1 cup water

  • 3 tsp beef stock powder

  • 3 tsp freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 tbsp thyme, chopped

  • Pie crust
  • 800 g organic flour

  • 44 g butter

  • 1 extra large egg yolk

  • 1 egg, beaten

Method

  • Pie filling
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • Season the flour well and toss the steak in the flour until well coated.
  • Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the steak. Remove steak from pot/pan and brown onions, deglaze the pan with brandy. Put beef back with onions and combine.
  • Add the beer, water, stock powder, pepper and thyme. Cover and cook for about 45 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  • Pastry
  • Place all pastry ingredients (except the egg) into a blender and pulse until a dough is formed. Remove from blender and knead lightly, shape into a ball, cover and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
  • Roll onto a floured surface to about ½ a cm in thickness.
  • Spoon filling into a 20 cm pie dish, top with pastry and cut a small cross in the centre of the pastry to allow steam to escape.
  • Brush with egg and bake for about 30 minutes and serve hot.
