Sometimes you just need a little bit of zest in your life. We don’t just mean fun, but also some fresh orange zest and a bit of ice cream to go along with the fun. Ice cream is one of the world’s favourite desserts and there are so many ways to make it. Our homemade orange ice cream is simple and you don’t need an ice cream maker, but you’re welcome to use one if you want to. It’s a fresh take one something you can always enjoy.

Homemade orange ice cream

The recipe uses simple custard which is used for your base. You can make your own custard from scratch and add a bit of orange essence or orange juice to the flavour too. If you have an ice cream maker, real homemade custard is the way to go. Serve your ice cream on top of any dessert like malva pudding. YOu can top the ice cream with some crushed nuts and scoop it all into a crunchy sugarr cone.

Ingredients

  • 225 ml unsweetened custard

  • 3 tbsp golden syrup

  • 225 ml milk

  • zest of one orange or naartjie

Method

  • First make the custard in the usual way but omit sugar.
  • Add golden syrup to custard while hot. Allow to cool.
  • Whip cream and fold in custard. Add grated zest and set in fridge.
