Every weekend, we all feel that familiar tugging on the inside that it’s time to light a fire for a family braai. With this homemade marinade recipe, braai time will even get better if that is possible!

With a delicious combination of ingredients whipped together and slowly simmered before cooled down, this marinade will add so much flavour to mealtimes. It only takes 25 minutes to prepare this homemade marinade before you need to allow it to cool down before you can use it.

Use this homemade marinade to marinate the meat before placing them on the hot coals. Then, keep on applying the sauce to the meat while braaiing for the ultimate taste experience. This sauce is really versatile and can also be used on hamburgers to enhance the flavour.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • ½ cup onion, minced

  • cup lemon juice

  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce

  • ¼ cup white wine vinegar

  • ¼ cup water

  • 6 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 finely chopped whole shallot

  • 4 large mushrooms

  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon liquid pectin

  • 1 teaspoons dry mustard

  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder

  • ¼ teaspoon cloves, ground

  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

Method

  • Add all ingredients into a blender and whip until it is smooth.
  • Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and let it simmer for 20 minutes, occasionally stirring and allow to cool.
  • Once cooled, store in a container in the refrigerator.
