Everybody loves ice cream and even when our tastes change, classic vanilla is always a favourite. Vanilla is an underrated flavour and is usually waved away as basic, but we don’t believe that. Vanilla, however subtle is a unique and beautiful flavour that just works in ice cream and so many more recipes. Our homemade vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce includes vanilla in the ice cream and chocolate sauce.

You will need to have an ice cream maker for this recipe. The chocolate sauce takes up most of the time and is well worth the effort. If you want to enrich your chocolate sauce, even more, add some freshly ground coffee beans to the mixture, just about a tablespoon. Your chocolate sauce will not taste like coffee, but rather like the richest chocolate you’ve ever had. Serve in a cone, in a sundae or with some tasty fruits for a great dessert with the family.

Ingredients

  • For the ice cream
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream

  • 2 cups half-and-half cream

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • For the chocolate sauce
  • ¾ cup white sugar

  • tbsp all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • cups milk

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract, or more to taste

  • 1 pinch salt

Method

  • For the ice cream
  • Combine all ingredients, stirring to dissolve sugar completely. Fill cylinder of ice cream maker no more than two-thirds full; freeze according to manufacturer’s directions.
  • (Refrigerate any remaining mixture until ready to freeze) Serve immediately or store in covered containers in the freezer.
  • For the chocolate sauce
  • Place sugar, flour, and cocoa powder into a bowl. Whisk together to remove lumps.
  • Heat milk, butter, and vanilla extract in a saucepan over medium heat until butter melts.
  • Whisk dry ingredients into the milk mixture a little at a time. Increase heat to medium-high until mixture comes to a simmer. Cook, stirring constantly, for 6 minutes. After 6 minutes, turn off the heat. Whisk in a pinch of salt.
  • Pour hot over ice cream or store in airtight containers in the refrigerator.
  • And serve with the ice cream.
