Flavour-packed biryani – Spicy rice to warm up from the inside

Add some spice to mealtimes with this delicious biryani recipe. This flavoursome rice dish brings a delicious blend of spices to mealtimes. It is a must-try if you like strong fragrances.

Rice is one of the staples in South Africa. There are just so much you can do with it. It is commonly served with Indian food. Rice does not only serve as a filler making you feel satisfied, but you can really spice it up for the most appetising meals.

Biryani is an incredibly versatile dish. Serve it with any kind of meat or even fish. In the photo accompanying this recipe, chicken pieces smothered in curry is served with the rice. However, you can also have small chicken cubes served as part of the biryani. Alternatively, add pieces of mutton, lamb, beef or any other meat you fancy with your tasty rice dish.

Whichever way you prefer to enjoy your biryani, you will not be able to live without it once you have tasted it once.

Ingredients

  • 400 g basmati rice

  • 40 g butter

  • 50 g blackcurrant

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

  • ½ teaspoon white pepper

  • 7 cardamon pods

  • 1 stick cinnamon

  • 500 ml water

  • salt for seasoning

  • 4 cloves garlic, dried

Method

  • In a pot add butter, rice, blackcurrant, water, salt for seasoning and spices and bring to a boil.
  • When the butter has melted, cover the pot and let it simmer for 30 minutes.
  • When the rice is cooked, take off the heat.
  • The rice can be served with curry.
