Chinese Sticky Chicken

Sweet-and-sour, crispy and sticky – that is the distinctive taste of a delicious Asian take-away meal. This Chinese Sweet-and-Sour Chicken recipe is so quick and easy that you can bring an Asian flavour to your home right from your own kitchen. And the best part is that you can do it in under 30 minutes. Make no mistake, it tastes just like the real deal!

The sweet-and-sour, sticky sauce is what makes this Chinese Sweet-and-Sour Chicken meal so incredibly palatable. It’s a combination of strong flavours that blend so well and end up in an authentic Asian taste sensation.

Chicken breasts work very well for this meal but you can also use chicken thighs. The chicken breasts are of course a lower fat option, so if you are checking your calorie intake, chicken breasts may be the better choice.

Serve this Asian meal on cooked rice or noodles. If desired, you can sprinkle some sesame seeds over the dish before serving. So next Friday evening, skip the take-away and prepare your own Chinese Sweet-and-Sour Chicken meal. It will easily become a weekly family favourite.

Ingredients

  • SAUCE
  • 2 tablespoons corn flour / maizena

  • 1 tablespoon chicken stock (1 cube chicken stock)

  • 5 tablespoons honey

  • 1 bunch chives, chopped

  • 2 tablespoons grated ginger

  • 1 litre water

  • CHICKEN
  • 6 skinless and boneless chicken breasts (500 g)

  • 1 cup corn flour / maizena

  • olive oil or coconut oil to taste

Method

  • SAUCE
  • Place all ingredients in a saucepan. 
  • Bring to a boil on medium heat and keep stirring until thickened.  Taste if the balance of sweet and saltiness is to your taste, adjust if you need more sweetness or saltiness. Keep warm.
  • CHICKEN
  • Cut all the chicken into cubes.
  • Place the chicken in a glass bowl together with the maizena.  Make sure all the chicken is covered well.
  • Place a saucepan on high heat with 4 tablespoons of coconut oil / olive oil.
  • Sauté portions of the chicken until crispy and browned on both sides, set aside and keep warm. Continue until all the chicken is done.  
  • Place the fried chicken in the warm sauce.
  • Serve immediately with cooked rice or noodles of your choice.
