If you love savoury snacks with a cheesy flavour, these cheese straws are for you. This recipe is quick and easy and will take about 30 minutes to prepare. Bear in mind that you need to allow the dough to rest in the fridge for an hour.

These cheese straws are the perfect snack to prepare when you plan to travel. Simply keep them in an airtight container and take them along as a piquant bite to enjoy on the road.

Ingredients

  • 420 g 420 Snowflake cake wheat flour

  • 3 ml 3 salt

  • 250 g 250 cold butter or margarine

  • 85 ml 85 ice-cold soda water

  • 15 ml 15 fresh lemon juice or brandy

  • 100 g 100 grated cheddar cheese

  • 3 ml 3 paprika

  • 2 ml crushed chillies

Method

  • Sift the flour and salt together. Cut the butter into small cubes and rub it with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  • Combine the soda water and lemon juice. Add to the dry ingredients and cut in with a knife. Knead lightly to a firm dough.
  • Cover in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • Roll out the dough onto a lightly floured surface, to a thickness of about 3 mm. Sprinkle the cheese, paprika and crushed chillies over the dough.
  • Fold in half to close and roll out the dough again to a thickness of about 3 mm.
  • Cut into strips of 1.5 x 10 cm. Twist each strip and place on greased baking trays, pressing ends down onto trays. Sprinkle over more paprika, if preferred.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Turn out onto wire racks to cool.
  • Store in an airtight container.
