Add some spice to your life with this easy chakalaka recipe. This vegetable relish is a tasty combination of veggies, spices and chillies resulting in a tasty accompaniment to almost every food type.

You can buy ready-made chakalaka in the groceries store as well, but why buy it if you can easily prepare it at home in 20 minutes? The best part of homemade chakalaka is that you can adjust the spiciness according to your tolerance level. Some people love this relish really hot whereas others just want a slight note of hotness.

  • 1 1 onion, chopped

  • 3 cloves 3 garlic, minced

  • 2 medium 2 carrots, grated

  • ½ ½ green bell pepper

  • 1 1 fresh chilli, chopped

  • 1 teaspoon 1 chilli powder

  • 1 teaspoon 1 salt

  • 1 tin 1 baked beans (410 g)


  • Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a pot.
  • Add the onion and garlic, fry until translucent and add the chilli powder.
  • Add the green pepper.
  • Add the beans, chilli, carrots and salt.
  • Mix and cook on low heat for about 5 minutes.
  • Serve.
