Ever tried chakalaka puffs? These tasty, savoury South African snacks are delicious any-time snacks. They are also perfect platter fillers. Keep our South African heritage alive by introducing your friends and family members to these piquant bites.

Not only are these puffs flavoured with chakalaka, but also with a generous helping of cheddar cheese and parsley. Chakalaka is a South African vegetable relish that is usually a bit spicy but you can adjust the spiciness according to your liking. Traditionally it is served with bread, pap, samp, stews or curries.

There are many homemade versions of chakalaka, but this recipe makes use of a store-bought relish. However, nothing stops you from using your own homemade chakalaka to prepare these tasty chakalaka puffs.

Many times when asked to take a platter of snacks to a gathering, the easiest way out is to go to the local bakery and purchase some bites. But with this chakalaka puffs recipe up your sleeve, you can easily whip together your own delicious savoury treats and surprise your family and friends.

Ingredients

  • 500 ml 500 cake flour

  • 155 ml 155 baking powder

  • 5 ml 5 salt

  • 1 teaspoon 1 cayenne pepper

  • 1 teaspoon 1 mustard powder

  • 400 g 400 Koo Chakalaka tin

  • 500 ml 500 cheddar cheese, grated

  • 4 teaspoons 4 olive oil

  • 125 ml 125 milk

  • 1 1 egg

  • handful parsley, chopped

Method

  • Sift and mix the cake flour, baking powder, salt, cayenne pepper, mustard powder and chopped parsley.
  • Add the grated cheese to the mixture.
  • Drain the excess oil from the Chakalaka and add to the mixture.
  • Whisk the egg, milk and olive oil then add to the Chakalaka mixture and fold in the mixture. Try not to overmix it.
  • Grease the muffin pan with butter. Fill the muffin pan with the mixture and bake in preheated oven at 200°C for 20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove from the muffin pan and serve with butter.
