Popcorn is great for those movie nights under the covers but also for those big sport events. Why not give your snack table an upgrade with this simply sweet caramel popcorn recipe. They’re golden bites of goodness.

Making the best caramel is all about timing and also making sure that you don’t make a mess, because hot sugar really burns. When making caramel, always remember a pinch of salt as it lifts the flavour. The caramel will bubble and turn a brownish amber colour and you’ll know it’s ready. You can make microwave popcorn or go big and pop everything using the old-school way.

Whip up a sweet treat in minutes with this easy caramel popcorn recipe.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups 5 popcorn, already popped

  • ½ cup ½ butter or margarine

  • 1 cup 1 sugar

  • ¼ cup ¼ golden syrup

  • ½ tsp ½ bicarb

  • 5 ml 5 vanilla essence

  • pinch of salt

Method

  • Make popcorn according to package instructions. You can microwave popcorn or make your own in a pot. Season the popcorn with a bit of salt. Set aside.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over a low heat.
  • Add sugar and syrup and stir continuously until all the sugar has dissolved (approximately 5 – 10 minutes).
  • Add vanilla essence and bicarb and stir. Quickly pour caramel mixture over your popcorn. Mix well using a plastic spatula or spoon.
  • Allow to cool and enjoy.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, you can bake the caramel popcorn in the oven for 30 minutes.
