Preparing Cape Malay bobotie will take you just over an hour. Preparation time is about 15 – 30 minutes and then you need to place the oven dish with the layers of deliciousness into the oven for about one hour.

While you wait for your traditional bobotie to bake to perfection, prepare a steaming hot pot of yellow rice. Although your Cape Malay bobotie dish contains a sprinkle of raisins, you can also add some additional raisins to your yellow rice, if you wish.

Serve this Cape Malay bobotie steaming hot from the oven with some extra chutney. Sit back and watch the pure delight on your family members’ faces as they indulge in this South African favourite.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons 2 oil

  • 2 2 onions, peeled and chopped

  • 1 kg 1 lean ground beef

  • 1 slice 1 white bread

  • 1 cup 1 milk

  • 1 tablespoon 1 medium or hot curry powder

  • tablespoon sugar

  • 2 teaspoons 2 salt

  • ½ teaspoon ½ pepper

  • ¾ teaspoon ¾ turmeric

  • tablespoons malt vinegar

  • ½ cup ½ raisins

  • 2 tablespoons 2 chutney

  • 2 2 eggs

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • Heat oil in a medium pan. Stir in the onions.
  • Cook over medium heat until transparent.
  • Add the ground beef. Cook until lightly browned and crumbly.
  • Soak the bread in half the milk, squeeze out the excess milk and add to the rest of the milk. Mash the bread with a fork and add to the mince.
  • Add the curry, sugar, salt, pepper, turmeric, vinegar, raisins and chutney to the beef mixture.
  • Spoon the mixture into a greased baking dish, place bay leaves on top.
  • Bake for about 50 – 60 minutes.
  • Beat the egg with the remaining milk and pour over the mixture approximately 25 – 30 minutes before the end of the baking time.
  • Serve the bobotie with steamed yellow rice and extra chutney.
