South African braai pizza: A creative way to enjoy the weekend

When the weekend arrives, your friends come over and you need food that feeds everybody. Not only is a braai a good idea, but there’s so much great food that you can make on there, including pizza. This South African braai pizza is a great addition to your braai skills and when you have a wide range of toppings, you can let everybody make their own. You’re also welcome to use your own pizza oven at home and there is a way to make it in the oven too.

South African braai pizza suggestions

The pizza dough is easy to put together and you don’t always need a dough that’s made over two days, but if you have a recipe like that, use it. The fun comes with the toppings and crispy bacon, onions and chilies are a great choice with some fresh avocado. If you are making it on the braai, the toppings don’t grill like they do in an oven, so make sure they’re cooked to your liking ahead of time. Let your friends help themselves as you put out a spread of sauces and toppings.

If you do have a pizza stone or 2 for the oven, heat them in the oven at it’s highest heat for at least an hour before baking.

Pizza time combined with braai time, makes this the ultimate meal to prepare and enjoy. Oh, and it’s really not that hard to make.

Ingredients

  • For the Pizza dough
  • 2 cups 2 flour

  • 5 ml 5 salt

  • 10 ml 10 sugar

  • 5 g 5 yeast

  • 170 ml 170 lukewarm water

  • Toppings:
  • cup tomato sauce

  • 2 2 avocados, peeled and sliced

  • 7 7 slices of bacon, cooked and cut into pieces

  • Feta (as much as you like)

  • 2 cups 2 mozzarella cheese

  • 2 cloves 2 crushed garlic

  • 1 pinch 1 salt

  • oregano leaves

  • chilli (optional)

Method

  • Preheat braai to 350°C.
  • Mix the yeast with some water and let it rest for an hour. Mix and knead pizza dough into a ball, leave to self-raise for an hour.
  • Cook bacon until crispy.
  • Roll out pizza crust and place onto a pan or stone.
  • Evenly spread out tomato sauce on top of the crust, leaving about 1 inch around the edge of crust uncovered.
  • Add a pinch of salt and a sprinkle of garlic over pizza.
  • Spread mozzarella cheese and feta on top of pizza.
  • Cut bacon into pieces and place evenly on pizza.
  • Place pizza for 10 to 15 minutes on a closed grill.
  • Let pizza cool for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Evenly place avocado slices over pizza.
  • Add your fresh oregano leaves on top.
  • Serve with some pepper and salt
  • And enjoy!
