Doughnuts need no introduction to South African households. These homemade cinnamon doughnuts will have your family crowding in the kitchen to snatch these beauties as they are getting fried.

Doughnuts are one of those treats that you can always see a line of people queuing for. Skip the lines and prepare your own batch at home. Our favourite topping is cinnamon as it spreads a delicious aroma in your home.

Baking your own cinnamon doughnuts are so satisfying. In just over an hour you can have your doughnuts ready. Just a friendly warning: if you fry these tasty gems once, your family will frequently ask you to prepare them.

As you inhale the warm, aromatic fragrance of these cinnamon doughnuts, you will already almost taste the soft, tasty doughnut in your mouth. That is how pungent the flavour is.

  • 4 teaspoons 4 dry yeast

  • ¼ cup ¼ warm water

  • 1 cup 1 warm milk

  • 3 tablespoons 3 castor sugar

  • 100 g 100 butter melted

  • 3 3 eggs

  • cups cake flour

  • vegetable oil for frying


  • Place the yeast, water, milk and sugar in a bowl and mix well, then allow to rest for 8 – 10 minutes .
  • Add the melted butter and eggs to the yeast mixture and mix until well combined.
  • Place the flour in a mixing bowl, make a well in the centre, add all wet ingredients. Mix well to form a soft sticky dough.
  • Tip the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for about 10 minutes. Place the dough in an oiled, covered bowl and allow it to rise for about 30 minutes.
  • Knead the dough and allow it to rest for 5 minutes. On a floured surface, roll the dough out to about 2 cm thick then, using a pastry cutter, cut them into 8 cm circles.
  • Using your fingers or a small pastry cutter make a hole in the middle of each circle. Place the dough on baking paper and allow them to prove for 30 minutes or until doubled in size. Deep fry the doughnuts in hot oil until golden brown 4-5 minutes a side, drain on kitchen paper and serve
