The evenings are cold and the days of snuggling under warm blankets with your favourite movies are here. With so much to watch, you want snacks to go with your favourite stories. Popcorn is of course the main movie snack around the world. We’ve decided that regular popcorn with spices and salt can be improved even more. Candied popcorn is a caramel treat that everybody can enjoy, but our Amarula candy popcorn is another treat entirely.

Amarula candy popcorn

First off, making caramel is a bit tricky because it changes quickly and is incredibly hot and you don’t want to burn with hot sugar. When adding the Amarula to the golden, slightly red caramel, do it gradually so that it doesn’t splash or split the sauce. Add the Amarula caramel to the homemade popcorn carefully too before it cools down. It’s a crunchy, sweet and perfect snack to enjoy this winter with your family.

Ingredients

  • 10 cups 10 popcorn (popped)

  • 150 g 150 butter

  • 1 cup 1 brown granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp 1 vanilla essence

  • ½ cup ½ Amarula

  • ½ tsp ½ baking Soda

Method

  • Prepare your popcorn and set aside in large heatproof bowl.
  • In a saucepan on medium heat, add butter and sugar. Continuously stir the syrup until the sugar dissolves.
  • Once the sugar dissolves and the syrup begins to turn brown, add the vanilla and Amarula (be careful to add this in gradually while mixing).
  • Allow the syrup to boil for at least 5 minutes.
  • Add the baking soda and you will notice that the syrup will turn foamy. At this point, remove from the heat.
  • While the syrup is hot, pour over the popcorn and mix until well coated.
  • Pour the popcorn onto a baking tray lined with a silicone mat.
  • Let it cool and enjoy!
