Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over the French empire at the battle of Puebla in 1862.

The vibrant culture, bright colours, azure beaches and temperate climate contribute to Mexico’s status as a popular tourist destination. Unfortunately, the pandemic has barred travel and you will just have to do with YouTube videos and pictures of this beautiful country for now. You can however, still get a taste of Mexico through their spicy, flavorful dishes.

A taste of Mexico this Cinco de Mayo

Here are some food ideas to help you prepare your very own Mexican fiesta.

Nachos starter

Make some guacamole and pair it with chopped tomatoes, onions and cheese to create a light meal which is perfect for a starter. Use corn chips for the nachos.

Burritos for mains

For the main course, burritos are easy to assemble and can be personalised to suit all tastes. The tortilla wrap can be filled with meat options like chicken, beef or pork and the filling ingredients include; black beans, diced tomatoes, avocado and corn to name a few. Vegetarians can opt for fried vegetables or beans, cheese and onions. To round the dish off, add cilantro leaves, cream and some lime juice.

Churros for pudding

To end the meal on a sweet note, why not take the time to make one of Mexico’s beloved desserts, churros. This dessert that is deep fried and filled with chocolate is always a winner.
