IT’S ALL ABOUT THE DRESS

For most brides-to-be, finding the perfect wedding dress is almost as important as finding the venue location and finalising the guest list.

Choosing a dress can be challenging, especially if you are still deciding what look to go for.

And, according to London-based designers and founders of the contemporary bridal brand, The OWN Studio, Jess Kaye and Rosie Williams, finding the perfect wedding dress is important.

“Since covid, there has been an explosion of joy with bigger parties the norm again. We’ve definitely seen this translate into fashion with demand for bolder silhouettes as well as fabrics that come to life on the dancefloor like sequins, satin and feathers,” they told Glamour UK.

“Evening and second day outfits are continuing to grow in popularity, with brides looking to build a considered wedding wardrobe for their weekend of celebrations. However, brides really want their outfits to be as sustainable as possible, opting for versatile separates that can be worn again and pieces that can be easily tailored or dyed after the wedding,” the designers continued.

The design duo explains that bridal designs are becoming more adventurous. Mixing fabrics and textures are all the rage. Traditional bridal fabrics such as organza, mikado, and chiffon are being reworked into contemporary styles and cuts and even layered together to create more unique modern looks.

THE TOP NINE DRESS TRENDS FOR 2023

Kaye and Williams share the top nine wedding dress trends for 2023 with Glamour UK.

1. DECONSTRUCTED DRESSING

“2023 is set to be the year of deconstructed dressing with a huge uplift in requests for cool separates. Brides love how separates allow them to change up their look from day to night with minimal effort, not to mention the added eco-benefit of being able to rewear them long after the wedding day.”

2. BIG AND COOL

The oversized trend taking the fashion industry by storm has also spilled over to wedding dress design. “Oversized styles and volume is back but the traditional bridal silhouette has been redefined for 2023. Voluminous skirts are contrasted with modern details such as scoop necklines and drop waistlines, giving these outfits a cool, nonchalant attitude,” the designer duo explains.

3. GROWN-UP GLAMOUR

“Sumptuous and sophisticated; confident dressing for the modern woman is a strong trend for 2023. Brides are looking for pieces which celebrate the female form with increasing demand for structured and fitted styles,” Williams told Glamour UK.

4. HIGH-LOW HEMLINES

Hemlines are also firmly in the spotlight with fashion-forward brides increasingly opting for different wearable lengths like maxi, midaxi, midi, mini and micro mini. Requests for ankle length pieces are up 120%, says Williams and Kaye.

5. LET THERE BE LACE

“Seen on the catwalks at Valentino, Miu Miu, Saint Laurent, lace detailing is a strong trend for 2023. We’re seeing more brides return to lace but looking for a contemporary twist. Many are requesting razor-sharp cuts for a more modern finish,” the designers explain.

6. TROUSERS, TROUSERS, TROUSERS

“The bridal party has grown up. The vast majority of our brides are in their 30s and so are their bridesmaids. They know their style and want to maximise their budgets, favouring styles and colours that their bridesmaids will wear again. We’ve seen a huge surge in requests for trousers among bridesmaids (a rise of 150%) as brides like the idea of mixing and matching silhouettes and shapes,” Kaye and William says.

7. PROMINENT ACCESSORIES

“When it comes to styling, brides are starting to favour a mix of metals, with silver jewellery staging a comeback. Sunglasses are now a permanent feature of the bridal look, with many brides bringing sunglasses to appointments to check the outfit works with their chosen pair.”

8. FEATHER AND EMBELLISHMENT

“Feather is a strong decadent detail seen across the catwalks, adding drama to the evening look. Update your day- time look with a detachable feather trim for instantly elevating night-time glamour.”

9. SUSTAINABILITY

“Multiple wedding looks also mean that more importance is placed on brides being able to rewear their pieces long after the wedding day. Many are opting to dye and tailor their pieces afterwards, so investing in silhouettes and fabrics suitable for dyeing are increasingly important to brides.”
