First for Africa: Adidas partners with Thebe Magugu for recycled sportswear

South African luxury fashion designer Thebe Magugu collaborated with Adidas for a new sportswear line made from recycled materials.

Thebe Magugu, the South African designer known for his show-stopping clothing lines, has collaborated with Adidas. The result is an exciting new line of sportswear made from recycled materials: Adidas X Thebe Magugu.

THEBE MAGUGU ON FINDING INSPIRATION

The designer drew inspiration for his debut collaboration — which features multicoloured apparel and footwear — his culture and the women in his life, namely his mother, grandmother and aunt.

Speaking to Business Insider, Magugu elaborated on how the sportswear line came to be.

“I’m infinitely inspired by the energy of the women in my life and the heritage of my native land.”

Magugu’s aunt Esther Magugu and mother, Iris Magugu, also feature as models, sporting looks from the new sportswear.

According to the South African designer, this will be the first time that Adidas has released an African-inspired collection. In addition, the collection reflects the Adidas aim “to create a more sustainable world”.

Featuring a spectrum of bright, vibrant colours, each piece makes a bold statement. The new line of sportswear leaves nothing to chance.

Sports and fashion lovers alike will have the option of choosing between swimwear, running jackets, tennis clothing and casual ready-to-wear pieces.

The young designer, who is based in Johannesburg, founded his own label in 2016. Magugu continues to make a name for himself in the fashion industry.

In addition, the tennis clothing in the new collaboration, is set to feature live during an upcoming tournament.

The new clothing line also caters to a wide range of sizes, from 2XS to 4XL, making it inclusive of all prospective buyers.

FASHION AND SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability continues to be an issue of increasing importance…and brands are taking notice.

The fashion industry has taken more steps towards being eco-conscious in its production methods. Magugu’s new fashion line makes a statement while proving that sustainability and fashion can go hand-in-hand. As a result, more brands may gain the inspiration to follow suit.
