2023 has not begun yet but looks like it will be a year of optimism and joy according to Pantone’s colour of the year.

The Pantone team sits every year to decide the colour of the year, this year is no different with the announcement of Viva Magenta as the colour for 2023.

Viva Magenta is from the red family of colours also leaning towards pink, in nature you can find it on the cochineal insect which is a primarily sessile parasite native to tropical and subtropical South America.

Viva Magenta is also close to magenta on the bisexual-pride flag which makes this year’s colour a little more inclusive.

Very Peri, the colour for 2022 is “a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways.

Pantone describes Viva Magenta as a signal of strength, they say that it explores the link between the physical and virtual, in its Instagram announcement Pantone said:

“Tapping into the experimental spirit of Viva Magenta, Pantone explores the dynamic between Artificial Intelligence and human creativity to create “The Magentaverse.”

2022 COLOUR OF THE YEAR: VERY PERI

Veri Peri, is a blue hue that represents warmth and friendliness, the colour symbolised the transition from the pandemic to our ‘new normal’.

Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri, a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone as the Pantone Color of the Year selection for 2022. Blending the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red, this happiest and warmest of all the blue hues introduces an empowering mix of newness.

Very Peri has a dynamic presence, furthermore, it was meant to encourage creativity and imagination in a world that was uncertain about its future.

2023 COLOUR OF THE YEAR: VIVA MAGENTA

Viva Magenta is the colour of optimism and joy, words like witty, audacious, rebellious and also inclusive have been used to describe it and the influence it will have on the world in 2023.

In explaining the Viva Magenta in more detail, Pantone said:

A nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta is also a hybrid color, one that comfortably straddles the physical and virtual, evocative of our multi-dimensional world. Assertive but not aggressive, it is a carmine red that does not boldly dominate but instead takes a “fist in a velvet glove” approach. Exuding dynamism, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta is a transformative red tone capable of driving design to create a more positive future.
