The Democratic Alliance (DA) – including leader John Steenhuisen – walked the State of the Nation (SONA) red carpet wearing all-black. And not because it is a classy, sophisticated, or timeless look….

Shunning designer dresses and fancy suits, the political party revealed that their dress code reflected the country’s current mood: dark.

THE DA WEARS ALL-BLACK AT SONA

In a tweet posted on their official account, the DA revealed the motivation behind their SONA look.

The tweet read: “Today is a dark day for many South Africans; load shedding is destroying businesses, and the cost of living is out of control.

“Fancy red carpets and empty promises won’t solve SA’s challenges”.

Dressed in plain black suits, conservative dresses, and heels, the opposition party members looked as solemn as the clothes they wore.

Additionally, members of the party did not arrive arrive with plus-ones as is usually practised at SONA.

It’s not the first time the DA chose to wear all-black on the SONA red carpet.

In 2015, the party – then including members Mmusi Maimane and Helen Zille – wore the colour as they claimed they had “nothing to celebrate”.
