Only a handful of South African fashion designers have showcased their exceptional garments at the New York Fashion Week, including Lukhanyo Mdingi and Laduma Ngoxolo.

The latest to join their ranks, Durban-based designer Nomonde Ntinga will be showcasing her authentic African designs at the prestigious fashion event’s Spring/Summer edition from 8 to 11 September. Her label, Monde Le Grand, has stunning dresses made from African prints for every occasion.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN FOR NOMONDE NTINGA

Speaking to SABC News, Nomonde Ntinga shared that she worked in health and safety before diving into the world of fashion.

“A lot of my followers on Twitter actually loved the dresses that I had put up every single Sunday and I just couldn’t find the right fit in a lot of the shops I was shopping in, so I decided to go to a few seamstresses and gave them my ideas and they produced.

“It just became more popular and more popular. A good friend of mine, the late Dr Sindi van Zyl, bullied me into creating this brand and here I am today.”

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND MONDE LE GRAND

Nomonde explained that her designs are inspired by her mother who she described as a “modestly-clothed” woman.

“A lot of our dresses are named after people that I know personally and a lot of women that I see on social media and I love their names.”

“Our items fit for any kind of figure, especially the baby mommies and the bumps, I love them a lot!”

In an interview with Drum, Nomonde said that her hope for women who wear Monde Le Grand is that they feel powerful without saying a word while wearing the garments.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK PREPARATIONS

Nomonde shared that due to visa-related issues, she will not be showcasing her designs at New York Fashion Week in February, however, she will be attending in September.

She decided to apply after seeing a social media post about the prestigious fashion week.

“There are people who went to school for this and all I have is my passion and personal style. My heart and my arms are open for what God has in store for me.”

“I am also especially excited for my team because some of the ladies have never ever been outside of Durban so it is exciting for all of us to be experiencing this together.”
