The Miss South Africa organisation recently received thorough backlash after they announced that the current Miss SA, Lalela Mswane, would be representing the country at the Miss Supranational pageant which is taking place in July this year.

The organisation has since gone on to release a statement about the outrage over their decision to have Lalela representing the country at the international pageant after many South Africans expressed their views that the organisation may be excluding second and third runner-ups, Dr Moratwe Masima and Zimi Mabunzi.

Miss SA says their decision is final

The Miss South Africa organisation received quite a bit of backlash after they revealed that Lalela Mswane – the current Miss SA – will be heading off to Nowy Sacź, Poland, in July 2022 to represent the country at Miss Supranational.

Many social media users felt like the other Miss SA runner-ups were being stripped of the opportunity to represent the country on an international level – especially since Lalela recently attended the Miss Universe pageant that took place in Israel last year.

Stephanie Weil – CEO of Miss South Africa, has since responded to the backlash and according to her, Lalela is completely fit to attend the pageant and would only be replaced by a runner-up if she wasn’t.

‘The decision is not uncommon’

“The decision on who represents Miss South Africa at each respective International pageant is solely at the discretion of the Miss South Africa Organisation.

“Unfortunately, with Covid-19 and its impact on International competition timelines, there will only be one opportunity for a representative to compete Internationally before the finale of Miss SA 2022.

“Our reigning Miss South Africa has been selected to compete at Miss Supranational 2022 as she is available to fulfil that duty.

“It is not uncommon for Miss South Africa to attend more than one international pageant during her reign, should the dates and timelines allow for it. Runners-up are chosen to step in should Miss South Africa not be able to fulfil her duty,” says Weil.
