THE INTENTION BEHIND ‘DOUBLETHINK SS22’

Thebe Magugu’s politically charged ‘Doublethink Spring/Summer ’22’ collection debuted at Pitti Uomo in Florence last month and was inspired by political journalist Mandy Weiner’s The Whistleblowers book. The book highlights the plight of political whistleblowers and corrupted dealings in South Africa.

Political cartoonist Jonathan Zapiro’s contributed his archival works to be used in Magugu’s collection. Zapiro’s work was used to highlight South Africa’s never-ending troubles with corruption. According to the brand’s website, the name of the collection was inspired by a George Orwell novel.

This references the collection’s title ‘Doublethink’, a term coined in George Orwell’s seminal novel, “1984”, which is defined as the act of simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs. Corrupt politicians are conscious of the truth, while telling carefully constructed lies – the art of knowing and not knowing, states the website.
