Yes, menstrual blood. Would you use it as part of your skincare routine? The menstrual masking trend is the latest to hit social media, but not everyone is a fan.

MENSTRUAL BLOOD FOR YOUR FACE

How far will you go to get glowing skin?

In a viral TikTok trend, women apply their menstrual blood on their faces for an easy at-home facial treatment. The trend has provoked both positive and negative comments, and terms like “menstrual masking” and “moon masking” has been given a whole different meaning. The social media video hashtag called #periodfacemask has over 6.4 billion views, as reported by Vogue

In one of her videos, TikTok user, deryazera, tells followers that she has been using her menstrual blood on her face for the past year. “I started doing it so that I can connect with my divine feminine energy. I wanted to heal my femininity.”

In another video she continues to explain that period blood is “the perfect face mask, a plant fertiliser, a magik manifestor and sacred ancestral internal feminine healing energy”.

For many women, their monthly period is more associated with moodiness and pain. But, more are seeing it as an opportunity to lean into skincare and healing.

Vogue reports that the practice can help absorb essential nutrients from your blood back into the skin. According to a 2016 study “menstrual blood-derived stem cells are a real source to design differentiation to epidermal cells that can be used non-invasively in various dermatological lesions and diseases.”

Many have also associated the trend with the moon cycle and how it can influence and affect your menstrual cycle – aka “moon masking”.

BLOOD MASK – TREND OR MYTH?

The #periodfacemask is not the first bloody trend to be linked to the beauty industry.

In 2018, reality TV star and beauty and fashion mogul Kim Kardashian West sparked outrage with her vampire facial. For the vampire facial, also known as the PRP (platelet-rich plasma) the client’s own blood is drawn before being injected back into your face, as reported by Independent.

Kardashian West underwent the procedure in an episode of Kim and Kourtney Take Miami, a Keeping Up with the Kardashians spin-off.

Not everyone however agrees with the trend.

“This is a big no dermatologically! Period blood contains uterus lining, fibrants, white blood cells and proteins among other biological components like mucus and clots which can cause inflammation or infection on your face,” dermatologist and author of Skin Sense, Dr Kiran Kaur Sethi told Vogue.
