Halston’s new chief creative officer, Robert Rodriguez, designed a 10-piece collection in collaboration with Netflix.

The capsule collection is in celebration of the mini-series that celebrates the life of the late designer, Roy Halston Frowick, whose whirlwind of a career was captured over five evocative episodes.

Halston celebrated in Netflix series

Halston, starring Ewan McGregor as the iconic designer, was adapted from the 1991 book Simply Halston by Steven Gaines, and premiered on 14 May 2021 on Netflix

At the peak of his design powers in the 70s and 80s, Halston‘s designs had a major influence on stylish American women at the time. Whether the pieces were high-end or ready-to-wear, the designer was able to make a name for himself with signature items and his otherworldly use of fabrics.

The dresses in the collection are all featured in the series and each is named after the woman who inspired the designer over the course of his career.

A good example is the “Liza Navy Lurex Pleated Caftan”, a flowy dress inspired by Halston’s good friend, singer/songwriter Liza Minnelli.

The limited collection is womenswear excellence and invokes that same feeling and energy as the pieces you see in the miniseries.

Rodriguez is quoted on IOL, discussing his creative process for the project. He emphasised his desire to add a modern twist to the iconic pieces.

“I started by looking at the key looks in the series and narrowed those down to the 10 most iconic designs that I felt would resonate most with our customer. I modernised the styles by changing fabrications, proportions and silhouettes.”

The costume designer for the series, Jariana San Juan, worked closely with Rodriguez for the capsule collection. They both did well to remind fashion lovers of Halston’s genius works and to bring the brand back to life, whether it was through Jariana San Juan’s work on the series and Rodriguez with the Halston brand.

Rodriguez highlighted the pieces that stood out to him during the show and he wanted to reinterpret them for this collection.

“I wanted to recreate a collection that felt iconic to Halston but in a modern way. Some of the key noteworthy styles include the Elsa, a sapphire blue batik printed silk-chiffon caftan; a red and fuchsia printed silk chiffon cascade gown; the Liza, a gold lurex pleated kaftan and the Angelica a ruched viscose jersey one-shoulder gown, just to name a few.”
