As South Africans prepare for the summer ahead, new data suggests that fashion choices are continuing to veer towards more statement-like pieces that are daring and different.

The Curtain Reveal Top

According to British Vogue, the ‘curtain reveal top’ is the new way to flash some skin that is being universally adopted by fashionistas.

“Visualise a pair of curtains and apply the way they drape to a teeny-tiny crop top, just barely secured with a fastening at the sternum”, writes Alice Cary.

After Megan Fox, Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber sported the look, searches for the pieces have jumped 78% in the past two weeks, with “front tie top”, “lace-up top” and “pin top” among the most sought after.

Its origin

It is reported that the fashion designer, Simon Porte Jacquemus was a major proponent of the midriff-flossing movement, and his “La Montagne” autumn/winter 2021 collection, unveiled in Paris in July, confirmed that he is enthusiastic about the curtain reveal. Seven looks at his colourful showcase included single fastenings.

“He introduced three risqué tops: The La Maille Pralù cropped ribbed-knit cardi, the La Maille Neve fluffy cap sleeve cardi, and a silky La Chemise Notte shirt. All are secured at the sternum with a metallic clasp stamped with an italicised Jacquemus logo.”

The actress, Megan Fox also went viral after she wore the La Maille Pralù cardi. This boosted sales by 52% in the 48 hours after she was seen wearing a cherry-red version with Jacquemus’s cutout La Jupe Valerie skirt, Femme LA sandals and a Mietis bag.

Pandemic revenge outfits

The desire for statement looks is part of the rise of the pandemic revenge outfit, reports The Independent, which refers to an outfit characterised by plenty of extravagances to make up for being unable to wear “going out” clothes throughout the pandemic.

In July 2021, online searches for high heels and dresses rose by 197% and 176% respectively as lockdown restrictions lifted, while nterest around “no underwear” designs and dresses featuring cutouts also surged.
