‘Copyrights to royal blue and beads?’: Tweeps weigh in on Tamaryn’s dress

Tweeps are not convinced that Scalo owner Sello Medupe ‘copied’ Bayanda Khathini’s work for his design of Tamaryn Green’s umembeso dress.

Twitter users are not convinced that Scalo owner Sello Medupe copied African haute couture designer Bayanda Khathini’s dress in his design for former Miss South Africa Dr Tamaryn Green’s umembeso gown.

Medical doctor Tamaryn Green had Instagrammers gushing when she posted photos of her umembeso ceremony with Ze Nxumalo. She wore a royal blue traditional dress designed by Scalo.

A few days later, Bayanda Khathini sent Scalo owner Sello Medupe a letter of demand for “copying” his dress.

“Our client discovered this design infringement when former Miss SA, Tamaryn Green, appeared on social media for her umembeso ceremony. As the creator of his (work), our client has a right to copyright protection of which he does not need to register,” read an extract from the letter of demand.

“The protection arises automatically as his work is original and is recorded in a material form,” continued the letter.

Bayanda Khathini first posted the letter of demand on Instagram but after his followers sided against him, he removed the post. Not before Tweeps got a few screenshots though.

Two pictures of the potential dresses that Bayanda Khathini may have been referring to were shared to Twitter. However, neither of the dresses are identical to Medupe’s design.

Tweeps were already questioning whether Bayanda Khathini had a copyright to “royal blue and beads”. This is because both dresses are royal blue but the beadwork on the dresses are different as well as the design on the top half. Take a look at the two dresses below.

Other Tweeps agreed that the dresses were not identical.

While the drama was unfolding, Medupe did not seem too phased as he had his sights set on something bigger — The Miss South Africa 2021 pageant.

The 34-year-old from Diepkloof, Soweto designed outfits for Miss SA top 10 finalist Kaylan Matthews and Miss SA runner-up Zimi Mabunzi.

He also designed musician and actress Thembi Seete’s gothic-glam look for her guest judge role on Idols SA on 10 October.

He also worked with the wardrobe team on the telenovela The River. Adding to his A-list design credits, he also designed Thato Mosehle’s national costume when she represented South Africa at the Miss Supranational pageant in Poland.

To continue his A-list credits, we have to name drop – DJ Zinhle, Khanyi Mbau Enhle Mbali and Boity Thulo.
