A picture of pair of busted and beaten-up Balenciaga sneakers has had tweeps amused after the luxury brand announced its questionable new shoe line.

The French design house came under fire by social media users after promoting their “fully destroyed” new shoe online.

BALENCIAGA SNEAKERS SELL FOR R30k

This week, Balenciaga revealed its latest look in footwear trends – the “extremely worn” and “distressed” version of its Paris Sneaker.

According to the fashion house, only 100 pairs of exclusive sneakers will be available to buy for $1,850 (almost R30 000).

But for the small fortune, don’t expect anything flashy.

The sneakers in question appeared to have been marinated in mud, ripped by a pack of wild dogs, and scribbled on by a toddler armed with a permanent marker.

On Balenciaga’s official site, less “distressed” sneakers are on sale, priced between $495 – $625, albeit still with dirt and the “worn in” aesthetic.

TWEEPS LAUGH AT ‘THE AUDACITY’

But whilst Balenciaga  – under the helm of creative director Demna Gvasalia – expected to make a statement with the sneaker, social media users found it amusing.

@totalydanii: “Homeless is an aesthetic now?

@osamachabbi: “I’m so sorry but this latest Balenciaga sneaker drop is giving me new virus strain vibes”

@MessiahMajid: “Why is poverty now an aesthetic for rich people?”

@msixelaa_: “I think Balenciaga is running a social experiment to see how much bullshit they can release and society eats it up”
