Facebook revealed their vision of the future: It’s both brilliant… and terrifying

Are you sitting comfortably? At a conference in California this week, it was announced that Facebook want to introduce technology that will allow you to type using just BRAINWAVES.

The development is still in its beta stage and is being trialled on the Oculus Rift virtual reality platform, but it shows a strong sign of intent from the social media titans.

What’s even more impressive is that this may finally bring an end to “phoneface” – the traditional act of dropping your phone on your face whilst scrolling through it in bed. If we can eradicate that, then this technology will make the world a better place.

Regina Dugan is the head of Facebook’s research lab Building 8. She says the goal is to create a silent speech system capable of typing 100 words per minute straight from the brain.

“It’s a way to communicate with the speed and flexibility of your voice and the privacy of text. We want to do this with non-invasive, wearable sensors that can be manufactured at scale.”

Duggan went on to stress that the brainwave system wouldn’t “just share random thoughts” (we can all sleep a little easier now) and that you would be able to mentally choose what you share in the same way you would physically choose to share a photo or a link. The announcement has raised eyebrows worldwide and looks to take the way we communicate to a whole new level.
