Animal scientists at Stellenbosch University have found the health benefits of zebra meat consumption in a new study. The study reveals that zebras offer a good yield of lean, nutritious meat, and plentiful offal, calling on South Africans to consider zebra meat as an alternative meat choice.

“The meat and offal yield from a zebra compares favourably to many game, equine and livestock species,”

This is according to an analysis of 20 carcasses published in the journal animal last month.

While it is not common in South Africa, the study reveals that the consumption of zebra meat could boost food security in the country, especially in rural areas according to the study, zebra meat is a “valuable protein source”.

“The considerable contribution of the edible byproducts and the high muscle yield indicate that the Plains zebra can potentially be used as a valuable protein source, thereby contributing to food security in especially rural areas of South Africa,” the journal further said.

Zebras are often hunted for their skin in South Africa and most of their meat is mostly exported to countries where the meat is considered a delicacy.

Zebra meat’s nutritional value

The study reports that Zebra meat has an average of 0.5g of fat per 100g and high levels of protein, zinc, iron, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids.

According to a report by American Restaurant, the meat has a “sweet but gamey” taste and it is largely consumed in European countries.

The report reveals that those who have consumed zebra meat before described it as one of the tastiest game meats ever, implying that the meat is or could be delicious.

“Those who have tasted zebra say that it’s one of the tastiest game meats they have ever eaten… Some people even say that it’s ‘sweeter than beef’ especially when the cut of meat is from Burchell zebra’s hind legs,” says the report.
