Director and singer of the Red Dress video Sarah Brand acknowledged the mixed feedback over her bizarre song and video. Brand’s Red Dress has racked up almost half-a-million views in three weeks, which is impressive for someone with hardly any social media footprint or any sort of fan base.

THEMES EXPLORED IN SARAH BRAND’S ‘RED DRESS’

The song explores themes of exclusivity and judgment in religious spaces and was filmed in a church in Oxford, England. Brand’s being consistently off-key was the main talking point of the video.

Her poor singing is both confusing and awkward and when taking a scroll at the YouTube comments, viewers weren’t afraid to express their disapproval or mock Brand’s singing.

Not a singer but a filmmaker

Brand directed the video herself and plays the role of two women, one in a white dress and another one who disrupts the proceedings at the church in a red dress. She spoke to the BBC about the video and admitted that she’s not a singer but rather a filmmaker:

The style in which I sing the song was important because it reflected the story. The vocals don’t seem to quite fit, they seem out of place and they make people uncomfortable – and the video is this outsider doing things differently and causing discomfort and eliciting all this judgement, she tells the BBC.

There’s that side of it with humorous feedback and there is also the other side that is judgmental behaviour and that is part of what this project deals with overall as a central theme, she says.

Brand is from Los Angeles, but is studying a Master of Science in Sociology at Oxford University. There’s been speculation by viewers on whether or not this video is a social experiment for her studies. The BBC article does mention that Brand has not confirmed if the song and video were connected to her studies.
