Killer Kau and Mpura: Amapiano Awards wants to make a difference

After hearing about the death of amapiano stars Killer Kau and Mpura, local non-profit organisation Amapiano Awards have stepped up and offered to help the family of the bereaved ahead of their funerals.

In a lengthy statement, the organisation revealed that they are hoping to raise money for their artists to ensure that they have funeral cover, disability benefits, and travel “insurance” when commuting to their gigs.

“In paying tribute to the two heroes (Killer Kau and Mpura) that have contributed immensely within the entertainment industry and as part of our efforts to promote and preserve the rich legacy that they crafted, Amapiano Awards are in conversations with financial services companies to create a facility that will assist in ensuring that our artists receive the funeral cover and disability benefits,” reads the statement.

The founder of the Amapiano Awards, Famida ‘Faye’ Omar spoke about wanting to ease the financial burden that falls on the shoulders of loved ones when accidents like this happen.

Speaking to TshisaLive, Omar also touched on how much better international artists are treated when they perform in the country while local artists are treated with no dignity and this is something that Amapiano Awards wants to change.

“Artists go to places and try to do gigs, and then they are fatigued … We give international celebrities so much leeway but our South African artists we treat with no leeway and dignity,” she said.

We earlier reported that there are claims that DJ Qness Ndlovu, head of communication for the SA Amapiano Awards, “stole” the original idea for the show which would make his version of the awards illegitimate.

According to Omar, Ndlovu was meant to join as a public relations specialist but took things into his own hands when she took a leave of absence to attend to some family matters.

While Ndlovu is currently disputing any wrongdoing, Omar confirmed that legal action may be taken against him.
