The nominees for the 2021 Feather Awards were announced today (5 October) at an intimate COVID-19 complaint event.
The Feather Awards have been running for 13 years now. The nominees list include Khanyi Mbau’s great Dubai escape being nominated for Drama Queen of the Year as well as a new generation of queer icons dominating the nominees list. The theme for this year’s event is Queer Lives Matter.
“Each nominated individual or organisation, in one way or the other, has either represented, inspired, or celebrated the LGBTQI community with excellence and distinction over the past twelve months,” said the organisers in a statement.
The 13th annual Feather Awards is set to take place on 11 November at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg. Ditshego Ditshego, Penny Lebyane, Lumko Johnson and Zizo Beda are set to host this year’s ceremony.
“It’s been an interesting 13 years building these awards as a community. From starting out as a small celebration at a nightclub in Rosebank, the Feathers is now a whole teenager, a fully operational powerhouse of programmes,” commented Thami Kotlolo, co-founder of the Feather Awards
