The meaning behind this worldwide awareness campaign is to raise awareness for cancer, specifically cancers that affect men. You’d be sure to find Mo Sistas and Mo Bros all joining in the fun.

Movember started among a group of friends from Australia in 2003. This included men to start off cleaned face on the first of November and grow a “mo” for the next 30 days without any notion of shaving. The ‘movement’ was later used as a campaign for men to raise awareness for, in particular, testicular and prostate cancer or mental health issues and physical inactivity. With all of this in mind, there are a whole bunch of benefits to having a beard, so you might be scoring more than you think:

If you don’t want a full beard, go for the stubble – women found it to be hot as hell

A study published on Evolution and Human Behaviour’s website found that women saw men with heavy stubble as the most attractive (probably because it makes men look older and not like 12 year old boys?!) Full beards, light stubble and clean shaven were found to be less attractive. Men, on the other hand, rated full beards and heavy stubble as the most attractive in their point of view. It was even found that masculinity ratings increased as facial hair increased. During the study it was also found that men with full-beards were perceived to be better fathers.

A beard protects your skin from the sun and also the winter cold

If men get a lot of sun exposure, wrinkles and a leathery feeling to the skin might appear. According to Huffington Post, beards are able to block up to 95% of the suns harmful UV rays to the skin. Beards can also protect your skin from the winter cold and prevent chapping of the skin.

You’ll be able to gain some relief from asthma

Men who suffer from asthma could gain some relief by growing out their beards. According to the Huffington Post beards help to prevent dust and pollen getting to your respiratory system.

Keeps bacteria out of your mouth

Facial hair can keep bacteria and fine dust floating around out of your mouth. Basically, beards can help throat and lung diseases become less severe by preventing all of the bacteria we come by every day.

Shaving can cause acne

If you shave you’ll induce acne-breakouts. It is said that shaving helps on acne because of the irritation on the skin which occurs after shaving.

Bearded guys are intimidating and seen as bad boys

A study published by Behavioral Ecology found that bearded men are perceived as more intimidating than other men. This is maybe because beards make men’s jawlines look bigger, which can make them seem aggressive. And, let’s face it; beards ultimately makes a man look bad ass which makes woman weak at the knees!

For all the men out there I think it is safe to say you should embrace the scruff this Movember!
