We all wish we could be superheroes but let’s face it, sometimes getting a healthy meal on the table after a long day just isn’t an option. If you’re having one of those weeks, this is for you.

We’ve rounded up all the best grocery deals from South Africa’s leading supermarkets so you don’t have to slave away for hours in front of a hot stove.


Meal of the week: Sweet Potato and Lentil Rogan Josh Curry with Rotis – R129.99

The easy-to-prepare meal kit contains Rogan Josh spice, sweet potatoes, brown lentils, coconut cream, coriander and mini rotis. It’s enough for two servings and the cooking time varies from 45 minutes to an hour.

Chicken Pie – Buy two pies for R110.00, or one for R76.99

Woolies’ Chicken Pie is on special this week – buy two for only R110.00. The shortcrust pastry base is filled with tender chicken, and goes well with green salad.

Alternatively, add two servings of butternut, spinach and red onion bake for R54.99, or their creamed spinach and cinnamon butternut for only R42.69. It’s ready to eat in under 2 minutes.

Pick ‘n Pay

Spaghetti with tomato and chorizo for under R100.

If pasta is what you’re craving this week, Pick ‘n Pay has a special on their inhouse brand – get two 500g packets spaghetti or macaroni for only R18.99. Jazz it up with tomatoes, garlic and chopped chorizo for an easy dish.

Simply heat olive oil in a pan and fry the chorizo until crispy. Add 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, one crushed clove of garlic and toss together. Add shredded basil, cooked pasta and season with grated Parmesan.

Roast chicken with couscous for under R130.00

With Spar’s chicken portions selling for only R54.99 for 2kg, there’s no reason why you cannot treat the family to roast chicken this week.

If you have some time on the weekend and want to go all out, try Spar’s recipe. Don’t forget to add garlic, bread, lemon and couscous to your trolley this week and prepare a feast that’s out of this world.

Roast Chicken with lemon and herb stuffing and pomegranate couscous


  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • Olive oil
  • 3-4 slices of crusty bread, crumbed
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • A handful of flat-leaf parsley, chopped
  • 6 sage leaves, chopped
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 whole SPAR chickens
  • 500 g couscous
  • Seeds of a large pomegranate
  • 120 g pine nuts, lightly roasted
  • 4-5 spring onions, thinly sliced

For the chicken onion gravy:

  • 3-4 onions, cut into thin rings
  • A knob of butter
  • A glug of olive oil
  • 250 ml white wine
  • 250 ml SPAR chicken stock cubes


  • Preheat your oven to 180C.
  • Gently fry the onion and garlic in olive oil until soft, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Combine with the bread, lemon zest and juice, the fresh herbs and seasoning.
  • Spoon into the chicken cavities and stuff firmly. Tie the drumsticks together.
  • Rub the chickens with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
  • Roast for 40-45 minutes or until the juices runs clear when you pierce the chicken through tis thickest part.
  • Transfer the chickens to a warmed plate, loosely cover with foil.
  • Prepare the couscous as per the instructions on the packet. Combine with the pomegranate seeds, pine nuts and spring onions.
  • While the chicken is in the oven, start with the onion gravy.
  • Fry the onion in the butter and olive oil over very low heat for 30 minutes.
  • Increase the heat, add in the wine and allow the alcohol to cook off.
  • Add the stock and any pan juices from the chicken which should be ready just about now.
  • Simmer until reduced by half.
