We have to say, one of the greatest things to come out of lockdown is Max Hurrell’s hilarious relationship with COGTA Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The DJ and the politician have been speaking about each on social media, after Hurrell remixed her now-infamous ‘when people zol’ warning.
What is a zol?
During a National coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) meeting, which most South Africans are now accustomed to, she said that the use of zol – a roll-up cigarette mainly used to smoke cannabis – could be dangerous regarding the spread of COVID-19.
Dlamini-Zuma said that “when people zol, they put saliva on a paper and then they share that zol,” indicating that it could be fatal regarding the transmission and spread of the virus.
When People Zol: Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma slips in the DMs
The surprise colloquialism raised a few titters, but Max Hurrell ensured there would soon be a laugh riot. His remix took South Africa by storm, and after a few back-and-forths with the minister, Dlamini-Zuma has finally dropped into the DMs – she sent him this private message on Saturday:
“Well done on entertaining the nation during this difficult period while maintaining your respect for the trade. I hope you will continue your platform to empower and inspire others now more than ever. Good luck!”
Truly, NDZ has been a fantastic sport about the whole thing. As the song made its rounds and gained its notoriety – even keeping Drake off the top spot of our national charts – Dlamini-Zuma previously Tweeted the following:
“Who is this Max Hurrell fellow? We just need to talk.”

Hurrel said his response was what we’d expect: “I said thank you and that I’m glad the minister liked it”. Hilariously, the musician has revealed that when he heard her say the words When People Zol he immediately thought of a beat in his head. The rest, as they say, is pop-culture history.
