Documentary presenter David Attenborough (93) is stepping in to teach children during the United Kingdom’s lockdown.

The English broadcaster and natural historian who is known for projects like Our Planet will join BBC’s virtual learning programme Bitesize Daily to teach students about animal behaviour, the world’s oceans and geography, the BBC reports.

Bitesize Daily

Attenborough is among the many famous faces leading lessons as part of the broadcaster’s plans to offer relief to parents struggling with homeschooling children during the lockdown.

The new series will also include Manchester City star Sergio Agüero, who will help youngsters learn to count in Spanish, and renowned physicist Professor Brian Cox has been recruited to bring science to life as he covers topics such as force, the solar system and gravity.

Former Member of Parliament Ed Balls will revisit his past as shadow finance minister, delivering a math class, and EastEnders actor Danny Dyer, who is a direct descendant of King Edward III, will provide a history lesson on Henry VIII, the BBC said further.

Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker will “drop into” lessons, while Brit Award-winning singer Mabel and former One Direction star Liam Payne will give a music and reading class for secondary school children.

The lessons, which have been created in collaboration with teachers and education specialists, will be available on the BBC’s Bitesize Daily for learners aged five to 14.

Lockdown Lessons

In South Africa, a group of matrics took it upon themselves to tutor the class of 2020 online and for free with the launch of what they call Lockdown Lessons.

Lockdown Lessons was created after a group of 2019 matrics realised how hard it must be for the class of 2020 to study and keep up with school work amid the national lockdown in South Africa.

It is said that the team of young tutors all passed their matric year with averages of 90% and above and have decided to do this for free. The team are helping both grade 11 and grade 12 students.

“As a group of 2019 matriculants, we can imagine how tough it must be to learn under these circumstances,” they said in a Facebook post. “In light of this, we came together to make a difference – we are offering free tutoring and assistance to any students that need help, further we have opened a YouTube channel where we upload lessons on different topics for different subjects every day and we host a number of free Zoom conferences where we tutor students.”
