Presidential workout: What is

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – FEBRUARY 20: President Cyril Ramaphosa is joined by citizens during a 5km morning walk from the Gugulethu Sports Centre to Athlone Stadium on February 20, 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa. Ramaphosa led a group of about 100 people on a morning walk to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Cyril Ramaphosa – The man behind the #TummyMustFall movement – has quite literally taken the role of President in his stride.

Yes, he’s experienced a bit of treacherous terrain on the way. But nothing has been able to stop him in his tracks. Our last Head of State would mainly be seen moving if there was a song and dance, but for Cyril, he never fails to get his daily steps.

So, just how does this 65-year-old put millions of younger citizens to shame? This is how he stays in shape.

Cyril Ramaphosa’s guide to healthy living:

Mix up the pace

Although better known for his walks, Ramaphosa has also been known to kick things into fifth gear. Well, maybe third.

He also partakes in a steady jog when the mood carries him. Photos of him burning up the Seapoint Promenade went viral earlier in the year when he was accompanied by running mate Trevor Manuel.

Set a reasonable distance

He has previously advised beginners to phase in long-distance strolls as they build-up their fitness gradually. He suggests that a two-kilometre walk is an excellent base to build from, before cranking that up to 4-5km and eventually 10km.

Cyril says he usually finds time to walk a “10k”. On recent public appearances where he’s invited the public to join him, he has set targets of 5km for other participants.

He’s also claimed that a 16km walk isn’t out of the question. In all fairness, he did go on to refer to that as a particularly “crazy day”.

Seize the day

Ramaphosa has also cited the positive effect these brisk walks have on mental health. After a public amble in February, he told the media that he uses his steps to “clear his head” and it acts as a form of “meditation” when stressed.

But where do we find the time to cover 10 000 meters? Well, if the President can do it, what excuses are left? He’s a real morning person, and sometimes starts his treks at 5:00 or even a little earlier.

Speed variations, setting comfortable distances and becoming an early bird. Could you follow the President’s workout routine? Or is it all a step too far?

Where does Cyril Ramaphosa walk?

He’s been spotted in Tembisa and parts of Gauteng, but also has a home in the plush Cape Town suburb of Fresnaye. As we’ve mentioned, he’s a fiend for the Mother City’s coastal routes.
