Three South African hotels recently made it onto Condé Nast Traveler’s ‘2020 hot list‘.

The global media company announced the news in May 2020 and also acknowledged how unprecedented the list may be seeing as various national lockdowns have been imposed all over the globe.

“When our team of editors and contributors set off for a year of hopscotching the globe to put together the list we could never have imagined that by the time we were able to announce our winners, we would be staying home for the foreseeable future.

“In 24 years of putting together this compendium of the latest and greatest industry openings, we’ve never published it in a year like this. Many on this list have had to, at least temporarily, close their newly opened doors. Even still, we are proud to unveil this selection of 76 hotels and 10 ships and sailings, whittled down from over 400 prospects.”

Condé Nast goes on to encourage people to visit the following hotels when it is safe to travel again. Of the places named, three of SA’s hotels made it onto the list and it’s not hard to see why:

South Africa and the 2020 ‘hot list’

Gorgeous George in Cape Town

This is said to be a “funky property that spotlights a previously under-explored part of Cape Town”. There are reportedly 32 rooms spread out over four floors. It is spacious and features “super-high ceilings with industrial exposed pipes contrasted with warm colors and accents”.

Lekkerwater Beach Lodge at De Hoop Nature Reserve

This lodge reportedly brings the same ethos and attention to detail to its first beachfront lodge on South Africa’s wild, rugged coast.

“It’s a pretty fabulous wild spot for a digital detox: to wake at dawn, watch whales, then spend the day walking, biking, exploring – or just sitting on a deck, marvelling at dolphins’ surfing skills. An honest hideaway that feels like a welcoming family farmhouse by the sea,” reads Condé Nast’s review.

The Farmstead at Royal Malewane in the Greater Kruger National Park

This place is said to be “a frills-on-frills escape where game drives are followed with massages and a personal staff keeps your Gin and Tonic filled”.
